The Asian Pacific American (APA) demographic is the fastest growing in the U.S. This also holds true for Central Texas. We total close to 100,000 and this constitutes about 7% of the population, the highest percentage among large cities in Texas. Our population doubles about every 10 years.
The largest sub-groups are people who identify as South Asian, Chinese, and Vietnamese, each group is about 20% of the total APA community. This demographic, taken as a group, is more educated with 71% having at least a college degree. It is also more affluent with higher median incomes than the general populace.
According to the U.S. Census Survey of Business Owners, there are over 7,300 firms owned by APAs. This is 2007 data and we expect reports from the 2012 survey, which will be released this fall, to show high growth. Average sales per APA owned business in the Austin-Round Rock MSA is almost $2.6 million which is 127% higher than the US average and 25% higher than all firms in the MSA.
